Zen-Share

Send a file to someone who has nothing installed

The person receiving it should not have to do homework first.

ZenShare turns a file on your PC into a link and a QR code. The person you send it to opens that link in whatever browser they already have and the download starts. They install nothing, sign up for nothing, and the file goes straight from your machine to theirs.

Why this is usually hard

Direct transfer tools are built device to device. Both ends run the same software, find each other, and send. That is a clean design and it is fast, but it has one consequence you meet constantly: there is no way to send a file to somebody who has not installed it. You end up talking them through a download before you can send them a photo.

Cloud services solve that by making everyone a visitor to a website, but they charge for the privilege, and they make you upload the whole file first so it can be handed back down again.

The third option

Your own computer can be the website. ZenShare runs a small server on your PC, gives you a link that points at it, and the recipient's browser downloads straight from you. Nothing is uploaded anywhere first, so the transfer starts immediately, and there is no copy sitting on somebody else's disk afterwards.

  1. Drop the file on ZenShare and pick a mode.
  2. Send the link, or let them scan the QR code.
  3. They open it. The download starts. Click Stop when you are done.

What the recipient actually needs

They needThey do not need
A browserAn app or an extension
The link, or the QR codeAn account or a sign-up
Nothing elseA particular operating system

Two modes, for two situations

Same network. If you are in the same building, on the same Wi-Fi, the file never leaves the local network. It does not touch the internet at all, and it runs at whatever your Wi-Fi can do.

Internet. If they are somewhere else, the link works over the internet. The file is encrypted on your machine before it leaves, and the key travels in the part of the link that browsers never send to a server, so nothing in the middle can read it.

The honest limits

Try it

Free, no account, and the person receiving the file installs nothing.

Common questions

Does the recipient need to install anything?
No. They open the link in any browser on any device and the download begins. Only the sender runs ZenShare.
Does it work if we are not on the same network?
Yes. Internet mode produces a link that works from anywhere. The file is encrypted before it leaves your machine.
Is there a size limit?
No limit on what you send. There is no upload step, so there is nothing to fit inside a storage quota.
Can I put a password on it?
Yes. Set a password before you share and the recipient is asked for it before anything downloads. The link on its own then reveals neither the file nor its name, so send the password by a different route than the link.
